Rue
Dryas moves his chair closer to mine, bringing his crackling persona to rest inches away from me. Itâs easy to be sucked into the collapsed star that is his aura; I experience him the way people experience gravity, an inexorable and unavoidable pull toward his presence. He sucks all of the air and energy out of whatever room he is in so that when heâs this close I canât possibly pay attention to anything else.
He looks down at me, a kind of calculation happening within his chartreuse gaze. Feeling trapped in his gaze, I look down at my hands in my lap. I wonder what heâs trying to quantify, and how I measure up to whatever it is. Thatâs a character flaw, I know, but I always need to know where I stand with other people.
I feel it, especially whenever I look at Dryas.
The waiter clears away everything but our wine glasses. Dryas plucks his from the table, sitting back and looking expectantly at the doorway. I face the doorway too, anxiety blossoming in my chest.
In the next moment, quiet music starts somewhere just outside the dining room, low and sultry. My breath catches when a couple comes in the dining room, holding hands. They are both tall and blond, though the woman is the fairer of the two. He wears a tuxedo like Dryas, she wears a little black dress with a lowcut neckline.
They are dancers, maybe. They ignore us, walking in an orchestrated sort of routine. I cock my head as they part, the woman coyly walking around the table. He pursues her, and she takes flight, running around behind my chair. He catches her and holds her down, kissing her roughly.
Iâm acutely aware of the fact that they are only a foot away. Crossing my arms, I hug myself as the man gets to his feet, yanking the woman up too. Though I can feel Dryas glance at me, I donât look at him. I canât, not while the couple passionately kisses right in front of me.
They donât just kiss, that isnât a fair thing to say. She twines around him. He kisses her and then moves her head to the side and bites her neck. Their breath quickens. So, does mine. my heartâs beginning to race for some reason.
The man turns the woman away from him, pushing her a few steps until sheâs up against the table. There is still a sense that they have rehearsed this part, but I wonder how long that will last. I steal a glance at Dryas, feeling his heated gaze on me.
He traps me with his eyes, his yellow-green stare mischievous. He reminds me of nothing so much as a cat looking at a mouse he plans to toy with before devouring.
The woman sighs as her partner bends her over the table, kissing her neck. His hands slide around to feel her breasts and she moans. Itâs then that I realize that the couple might not be here to dance.
They could be here to have sex in front of an audience.
